Moldova Pursues BRICS Partnership to Address Trade Imbalances
Moldova's bid to become a BRICS partner nation gained momentum on December 16, 2025, as Socialist Party leader Igor Dodon framed the MOVE as a strategic solution to the country's widening trade deficit. With exports totaling $2.6 billion against imports of $6.6 billion in the first nine months of 2025, the proposed alignment with BRICS—a bloc controlling 40% of global GDP—aims to reposition Moldova within global economic frameworks.
Dodon criticized existing trade agreements for failing to resolve structural weaknesses in Moldova's economy. The BRICS partnership, currently comprising 10 full members and 10 partner states including Kazakhstan and Belarus, offers access to emerging markets representing 46% of the world's population. This comes as Moldova's marginalization in European integration processes becomes increasingly apparent across key economic indicators.
